Grasp the global market dynamics to build a green and low-carbon industry

José Carlos da Fonseca, the executive director of Brazil Forest Industry Association addressed a keynote report on “The forest industry of brazil”. He presented the outstanding contribution of the Brazilian forest industry on achieving carbon reduction and carbon neutrality under the current climate crisis. The Brazilian forest industry has developed about 5,000 renewable, recyclable, mostly biodegradable bio-based products. The share of renewable energy generation has already reached 90%.

Mr. João Cordeiro, the principal of AFAR Group introduced the dynamics of global paper market and the development of pulp and paper industry both in China and Brazil with the title of “Market dynamics in global pulp and paper industry: especially in Brazil”. He mentioned in the report that the global trade volume of pulp has reached 70 million tons, and the demand of paper towels and wrapping paper had the fastest growing speeds compared with other paper products. The further increase in industry demand for pulp and recycled fibers had been driven.

Give full play to the advantages of green biomass and achieve high value utilization of resources

Dr. Jin Yongcan from Nanjing Forestry University introduced the main sources and development history of carbon emissions in paper industry with the theme of “The carbon properties in pulp and paper industry and the resourceful utilization of lignin”.

He analyzed the problems that we had to face if we want to realize the “carbon peaking and carbon neutrality” target, and pointed out that the high-quality sustainable development of paper industry needs the strengthening of recycle, the utilization of waste resources and the reduction of the consumption of energy resources. He believes that applying industrial lignin from pulping to agricultural and forestry crops is an effective way to realize lignin resource utilization and carbon balance of fiber raw materials.

Junming Xu, the researcher from the academic exchanging committee, China Technical Association of Paper Industry and the researcher of Institute of Chemical Industry of Forest Products, CAF released a report about “The development of lignin based chemicals and cutting-edge technologies”. He introduced the strategies for high-value utilization of wood fibers, such as the thermal conversion of matters from forest into biofuels or the separate and utilization of matters to obtain lignin and cellulose. He paid attention to the development of lignin based chemicals and leading technologies, such as lignin separation, sulfonation, capping, and derivative electrocatalytic reactions.

Jose Tomas Corthorn, the chief representative of CMPC China delivered a presentation about “The strategy of CMPC towards a circular bioeconomy”. He shared the experiences across the entire value chain of the wood industry enriched and expanded by CMPC, and introduced its research and innovation on the aspect of biomass products, sustainable packaging, pulp molding products and so on.

Construct the properties of paper-based material
Research and develop advanced functional materials

Linxin Zhong, the doctor from South China University of Technology made a report entitled “Paper-based flexible supercapacitor electrode”. He shared the functional characteristics and potential application of a variety of paper-based flexible supercapacitor electrode materials, such as  nitrogen-doped carbon sheet or polyaniline (PANI) nanocellulosic fiber flexible composite materials, ultra-high capacity foldable supercapacitor electrode materials, and electrostatic self-assembly paper-based flexible composite electrodes.

With the title of “The progress in research and application of advanced cellulose functional materials”, Shuangxi Nie, the professor of Guangxi University introduced the research progress and application prospect of advanced cellulose functional materials in energy collection and conversion, pulse direct current conversion, and water collection. He also analyzed the research of cellulose functional materials in molecular regulation, structural design, structure-activity relationship and so on.

Wei shen, the professor from Monash University made a report entitled “The improvement strategy of paper-based analysis device in colorimetric performance and practical application”. He summarized the working principle of paper-based colorimetric analytical devices (PADs), the strategy of improving colorimetric performance, and the designing programme of improving portability. He discussed especially on the principle of controlling liquid-paper interaction based on PADs design to increase color saturation.
